For a full-time staff member to implement ILGA Asia’s communication strategies

ILGA Asia is looking for a Communications and Campaign Officer to join our team. This is an exciting full-time position to work with more than 170 LGBTI+ member organizations across Asia to advance the human rights of LGBTI+ people.

  • Title: Communications and Campaign Officer (Full-time) 

  • Duty station: home-based (remote working) until international travel restrictions are lifted for Thailand

  • Languages Required: English

  • Expected duration: 3 months on probation followed by a 9-month contract

  • Remuneration: 50,000 Thai Baht per month (gross)

Background

ILGA Asia is the Asian Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association, representing East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Asia. The Region was first established in Mumbai in 2002. Our vision is a world where Asia is a safe place for all, where all can live in freedom and equality, be properly informed in the nature of sexual orientation and gender identity & expression and sex characteristic (SOGIESC) rights, have access to justice, and diversity is respected.

Our missions are:

  • To promote universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the elimination of all forms of discrimination and stigmatization based on SOGIESC in Asia and including the specific provisions of the UN conventions and covenants specified in the Constitution of ILGA; 

  • To work for the equality of all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression and sex characteristic, as well as liberation from all forms of discrimination and stigmatization; and

  • To empower and support LGBTI communities, organizations, and individuals in Asia, while encouraging community building and networking.

Key responsibilities

A. Implementation of communication strategy 

One of the main roles of the Communications and Campaign Officer will be to lead on implementing multi-channel communications strategies, including media and public relations, online and social media, communications with membership and campaigning, targeting our wide range of audiences – including key decision-makers at regional and national level, LGBTI and human rights activists and allies,  the general public and new audiences (such private sector). The goal of these strategies will be to advance ILGA Asia’s organizational goals and messages and amplify ILGA Asia’s advocacy, movement building, organizational development, and fundraising work. 

B. Contents development

One of the main responsibilities of the Communications and Campaign Officer will be to lead on developing media content for the organization. This will include developing effective, appropriate, and creative messaging for ILGA Asia and our member organizations which will enable us to shape the public conversation. 

C. Media and public relations

Another important feature of your work at ILGA Asia will be to lead on developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with key media outlets at national, regional and international levels, with a view of ensuring the highest profile for ILGA Asia and positioning ILGA Asia as a go-to place for information on LGBTI issues in Asia.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Social Sciences; a degree in Journalism or Media and Communications is preferred

  • Strong writing skill in English is a requirement; please submit 3 pieces of writing samples in your application; proficiency in 1 or 2 other Asian languages is an asset

  • Prior experience working with the press is required; previous experience working for a news agency or a media company is an advantage 

  • Basic knowledge of using at least 1 graphic design software is required; knowledge of a publishing tool is an advantage; please submit a piece of design sample that you produced in the past with the description attached

  • The position is open to people of all gender identities, sexual orientations or sex characteristics; those who identify as a lesbian or bisexual woman, trans person or intersex person are strongly encouraged to apply

  • The first-hand experience, either as a volunteer or an employee, in an LGBTI organization, is highly desirable
