ILGA Asia is looking for a Global Advocacy Intern to assist our advocacy efforts. This internship will start in mid-October 2022, for a period of 3 months to 6 months. 

The intern will report directly to the Global Advocacy Officer. This is an excellent opportunity for those who want to gain first-hand experience and knowledge of advocating SOGIESC-related rights through UN human rights mechanisms and strategic litigation, and to contribute to the Asian LGBTIQ and human rights movement.

Background

ILGA Asia is the Asian Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, representing East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Asia. The Region was first established in Mumbai in 2002. Our vision is a world where Asia is a safe place for all, where all can live in freedom and equality, be properly informed in the nature of sexual orientation and gender identity & expression and sex characteristic (SOGIESC) rights, have access to justice, and diversity is respected.

Our missions are:

  • To promote universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the elimination of all forms of discrimination and stigmatization based on SOGIESC in Asia and including the specific provisions of the UN conventions and covenants specified in the Constitution of ILGA; 

  • To work for the equality of all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression and sex characteristic, as well as liberation from all forms of discrimination and stigmatization; and

  • To empower and support LGBTIQ communities, organizations and individuals in Asia, while encouraging community building and networking.

One of ILGA Asia’s strategic objectives is to strengthen the capacity of LGBTIQ civil society in working with human rights mechanisms in Asia. So far, we have been delivering Training for Trainers workshops on UN mechanisms in multiple sub-regions and providing technical support to our member and LGBTIQ communities to directly engage with those mechanisms.

Key responsibilities

  • Calendaring and supporting notification of ILGA Asia members on upcoming deadlines and opportunities related to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures, and High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) follow up and review

  • Supporting ILGA Asia’s members and LGBTIQ human rights defenders in drafting shadow reports and other submissions to UN human rights and sustainable development follow up mechanisms 

  • Support monitoring and research on follow-up and implementation of UPR and Special Procedures recommendations, Treaty Body concluding observations and SOGIESC-specific general comments, and goals and targets of the Sustainable Development agenda

  • Conduct desktop research on in-country litigations on specific SOGIESC-related issues and monitoring of country-specific human rights commitments and obligations

  • Assisting UN Advocacy Officer in the development and implementation of new advocacy activities

  • Carrying out organizational and administrative tasks to support advocacy needs

Qualifications

  • Have basic knowledge of the United Nations human rights system, preferably also have direct experience of engagement with one or more human rights mechanisms, especially the UPR;

  • Experience (paid or unpaid) in NGO work, in the community or grassroots organizing, advocacy, or other activist work, preferably in the LGBTIQ sector, and/or undergraduate or graduate degree in law, policy, human rights, social sciences, or a relevant field is a great asset. However, current students with no prior working experience are encouraged to apply for this internship;

  • The ability to independently conduct complex legal research in an organized and methodical manner. High level of attention to detail and accuracy;

  • Strong writing skill in English is a requirement; proficiency in 1 or 2 other Asian languages is an asset;

  • Be well organized, motivated, and able to work remotely;

  • Have access to a functional computer, words processor, and a good internet connection during the internship;

  • The internship is open to people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, and sex characteristics; those who identify as a lesbian or bisexual woman, trans person, and intersex person are strongly encouraged to apply

Internship conditions

  • The intern will work from their current location. 

  • The exact working hours and dates can be flexible, but a candidate should be available to work full-time (37.5 hours/week).

  • The intern will receive an honorarium of 400 USD a month for the duration of their internship.

  • The intern will be recognized in all publications and activities that they are contributing to.
