Call for Applications: UN Advocacy Intern
ILGA Asia is looking for an intern to assist our advocacy efforts. This internship will start in mid-March 2021, for a period of 3 months to 6 months.
The intern will report directly to the UN Advocacy Officer. This is an excellent opportunity for those who want to gain first-hand experience and knowledge of advocating SOGIESC-related rights through UN human rights mechanisms and strategic litigation, and to contribute to the Asian LGBTI and human rights movement.

Background
ILGA Asia is the Asian Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, representing East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Asia. The Region was first established in Mumbai in 2002. Our vision is a world where Asia is a safe place for all, where all can live in freedom and equality, be properly informed in the nature of sexual orientation and gender identity & expression and sex characteristic (SOGIESC) rights, have access to justice, and diversity is respected.
Our missions are:
To promote universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the elimination of all forms of discrimination and stigmatization based on SOGIESC in Asia and including the specific provisions of the UN conventions and covenants specified in the Constitution of ILGA;
To work for the equality of all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression and sex characteristic, as well as liberation from all forms of discrimination and stigmatization; and
To empower and support LGBTI communities, organizations and individuals in Asia, while encouraging community building and networking.
One of ILGA Asia’s strategic objectives is to strengthen the capacity of LGBTI civil society in working with human rights mechanisms in Asia. So far, we have been delivering Training for Trainers workshops on UN mechanisms in multiple sub-regions and providing technical support to our member and LGBTI communities to directly engage with those mechanisms.
Key responsibilities
Supporting notification of ILGA Asia members on the upcoming deadlines and opportunities related to the UPR, Treaty Bodies, and Special Procedures
Supporting ILGA Asia’s members and LGBTI rights defenders in drafting shadow reports and other submissions to a variety of UN Mechanisms
Support monitoring and research on follow-up and implementation of UPR recommendations
Supporting UN Advocacy Officer in developing the Asian LGBTI-friendly lawyers & law firms portfolio of the organization
Conduct desktop research on in-country litigations on specific SOGIESC-related issues
Assisting UN Advocacy Officer in the development of new activities
Carrying out organizational and administrative tasks to support advocacy needs
Qualifications
Have basic knowledge of the United Nations human rights system, preferably also have direct experience of engagement with one or more human rights mechanisms, especially the UPR;
Experience (paid or unpaid) in NGO work, in the community or grassroots organizing, advocacy, or other activist work, preferably in the LGBTI sector, and/or undergraduate or graduate degree in law, policy, social sciences, or a relevant field is a great asset. However, current students with no prior working experience are encouraged to apply for this internship;
The ability to independently conduct complex legal research in an organized and methodical manner. High level of attention to detail and accuracy;
Strong writing skill in English is a requirement; proficiency in 1 or 2 other Asian languages is an asset;
Be well organized, motivated, and able to work remotely;
Have access to a functional computer, words processor, and a good internet connection during the internship;
The internship is open to people of all gender identities, sexual orientations, and sex characteristics; those who identify as a lesbian or bisexual woman, trans person, and intersex person are strongly encouraged to apply
Internship conditions
The intern will work from their current location.
The exact working hours and dates can be flexible, but a candidate should be available to work full-time (37.5 hours/week).
The intern will receive an honorarium of 400 USD a month for the duration of their internship.
The intern will be recognized in all publications and activities that they are contributing to.
