5 statements and visions for the future at the 9th ILGA Asia Conference

9 February 2023

The 9th ILGA Asia Conference ran from 28 November to 2 December 2022 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and the closing ceremony was the setting where five statements were delivered by conference participants.

These statements are a distillation of collective discussions, collaboration, and planning stemming from the gatherings at our pre-conferences that are divided based on identity or thematic focus.

At this conference, we held 13 pre-conferences ranging from the Lesbian pre-conference to the Interfaith pre-conference and, for the first time ever, the Humanitarian pre-conference and Non-binary pre-conference.

Out of these, 4 groups coordinated to release statements representing their strategic vision for advancing rights and inclusion for their respective communities. Download them below:

And for another historic first, artists at the 9th ILGA Asia Conference have self-organised to release their own Artist statement — delivered collectively by Nhung Dinh, Meraj Sharifi, Kenna Khulan, Kai Mata, Chen Junmi, and Samapika Gautam (left to write respectively).

The artists underlined their aspirations for the integration of ‘artivism’ within our movement. They were brought together primarily through the inaugural ILGA Asia Queer Arts Festival (IAQAF) held in conjunction with the conference.

Our conference participants form the vanguard of the Asian LGBTIQ rights movement. These statements are born out of their collective dedication and insight and would serve to inspire our team and communities in our work.
