ILGA Asia is looking for a Communications Intern to assist in our communications efforts. This internship will start in mid-May 2023, for a period of 3 months to 6 months (preference will be given to applicants who can commit to 6 months).

The intern will be working directly with the Communications Officer and will assist in the management of our social media platforms and create fresh and innovative content on LGBTIQ rights in Asia. Opportunities for career development and advancement are available for interns who excel in their roles.

  • Duty station: Home-based (remote working)

  • Expected duration: 3-6 months

  • Starting Date: As soon as possible or by 10 May

  • Remuneration: USD 500 per month.

Background 

ILGA Asia is the Asian Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association, representing more than 190 member organisations across East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Asia. Our vision is a world where Asia is a safe place for all, where all can live in freedom and equality, be properly informed in the nature of sexual orientation and gender identity & expression and sex characteristic (SOGIESC) rights, have access to justice, and diversity is respected; regardless of their age, race, ethnicity, nationality, belief, language, class, caste, health and other statuses.

  • To promote universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the elimination of all forms of discrimination and stigmatisation based on SOGIESC in Asia and including the specific provisions of the UN conventions and covenants specified in the Constitution of ILGA; 

  • To work for the equality of all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression and sex characteristic, as well as liberation from all forms of discrimination and stigmatisation; and

  • To empower and support LGBTIQ communities, organisations and individuals in Asia, while encouraging community building and networking.

One of ILGA Asia’s strategic objectives is making a database for strategic information and knowledge sharing and building on SOGIESC issues in Asia. So far, we have been using our online channels to promote our work and share information and knowledge with our members and LGBTIQ communities in the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the design intern to ideate and create compelling content, including reels, social media posts, videos, and other media.

  • Assist in the development and execution of the content calendar.

  • Help manage our social media platforms, ensuring consistent and timely posting.

  • Contribute to the creation of newsletters, articles, press releases, and other written content.

  • Review and edit website articles, newsletters, social media copy, and other communication outputs for clarity, accuracy, and adherence to our brand standards.

  • Support the Communications Officer and Campaign Coordinator in the creation and dissemination of content related to ILGA Asia's regional campaigns across various thematic areas.

  • Maintain an archive of media coverage of ILGA Asia in the form of website links, screenshots, online publications, audio-visual materials, and other relevant content.

  • Assist in the collection and analysis of analytics data from our online platforms, including social media, website, and email marketing.

Qualifications and experiences

  • The ideal candidate must have a strong understanding of social media platforms, marketing strategies, and best practices. They should have a demonstrated ability to create and publish various forms of content, including social media posts, articles, press releases, newsletters, reels, etc., that have gained significant reach and engagement.

  • They should possess knowledge of SOGIESC issues and have experience working with an LGBTIQ organisation or nonprofit sector.

  • Excellent writing skills in English are a must-have, and proficiency in one or two other Asian languages is desirable.

  • A bachelor's degree in Journalism, Media, Communications, or a related field is preferred.

Internship conditions

  • The intern will work from their current location. 

  • The exact working hours and dates can be flexible, but the candidate should be available to work full-time (37.5 hours/week).

  • The intern will receive an honorarium of 17000 Thai Baht for the duration of their internship.

  • The intern will be recognised in all publications and activities that they are contributing to.
